A Stump of a Problem

We recently removed a tree from our backyard (sniff), there was nothing wrong with it, I actually loved the shade it provided, but our backyard is super small, and the tree was right smack in the middle of it, and with two kids who love to play in the backyard, it was just simply in the way.  I asked the guy who cut it for us to leave behind a small stump, he gave a look like I was nuts, but left it anyways.
He also happens to be the guy who mows our lawn, and is here every week.  Well, I have yet to touch the stump, because as you can see, it's big, as in too tall, and I will need to shorten it, problem is, I only own a hand saw.  My miter saw will not be able to cut through that bad boy, and I have been procrastinating on the cutting, I know it's going to take me a while, and my poor arm just can't handle it right now.  I can't even move the stump, so it has been sitting out in the back, for the lawn guy (who thinks I'm crazy) to see.  What to do?  Any suggestions?

Does anyone know why the leave are still green?  It's been about 3 weeks since it's been cut??????

And for anyone out there who might be wondering why I would want to keep a stump, like my lawn guy who thinks I've lost it, well, I have been inspired by all of these pretties, not to mention bloggers who have done similar ones as well:

Aren't they pretty, and my arm says it would had been so worth it to buy them from these sites, especially that last one.  Not to mention, mine will never look like any of those.

So,  is there any one out there who has tried this?  I will be getting my rear in motion, and start the sawing progress, because I know it will a long one, and I really would like to do this before fall gets here, just don't hold me to it, please.

  1. I would of totally kept the stump too! lol I believe you have to do it shave the outer bark off and then seal it.

    1. Yes, I've been reading up on it, I wouldn't mind that, it's the cutting it shorter that is giving me muscle pains.

  2. I would ask your lawn guy to bring his chainsaw back and cut it for you (just make sure he cuts it straight!). Is it tall enough to cut in half and get two out of it? I love my stump stools! I left the bark on because I loved the look for now but the smooth wood ones are also gorgeous.

    1. I would love to ask him to cut if for me, but honestly, I don't want to scare him anymore, he might stop cutting my grass ;) I don't think it might be possible to get two out it, but if I had the resources, I would love to make some to place as mats for a rustic dining table decor. I have seen your stools, and loved them.

  3. Totally ask the lawn dude. Tell him what you're doing. What's the worst that could happen? He'll think you're even crazier? Crazy is such a relative term. ;)

  4. Some hardware stores rent tools. And there are also rental places that rent them. Maybe rent a saw?

  7. I so love these natural tables - smooth talk someone with a chainsaw and make two (or three!) at different heights...and make sure you show us when you've done it!

  9. I saved two stumps when we had some trees taken out in the spring. They are now drying out and the bark is pealing off. Can't wait until next spring to see if they are ready for me to do something with. The tree guys looked at me weird but they took the time to cut them really straight. Good luck.
